85. Ensemble, et al. “Finding Simple Wonders as the Day Turns the Night” When the Tape Runs Out [Self-Released]

Moment @ 2:16

The electricity went out at precisely the same moment that her coffee cup filled to the brim from the automatic dispenser. She swore and sighed simultaneously, thus obfuscating the curse with a kind of exhaling mumble, and even though it was unintentional it was also unnecessary because she was the only one still at the office. She grabbed her cup and spilled a bit on the carpet without noticing as she walked phlegmatically back to her desk. There was absolutely no reason to still be there and yet she was because she had nowhere else to go, no one to meet, and only a boring 40-minute commute facing her when she eventually did gather up enough energy to get out the door. Yet while it would be more normal in other places in the world to still be at one’s desk as the sun went down, even if there was no work to do, this was Alaska in the summertime, and sunset meant Tuesday was nearly about to become Wednesday. After pondering this in her swivel chair for a few more idle minutes she remembered that it was dimmer than it was before she had gotten her coffee. Oh yeah - no electricity. She opened the dusty and hideous vertical blinds to let the purple and maroon shades fill the sterile interior of the first floor. She knew the colors were there. They often tried to infiltrate her heavy duty drapes at home as she tried to fall asleep that August. She just hadn’t actually taken the time away from being bored to really look at them until then. The rest of her coffee tasted much different that night.
