84. The Rapture “Children” In the Grace of Your Love [DFA]

“I can’t see you and me.”

It was either a species he learned about on the Discovery Channel one bleary afternoon or it was a sordid folktale from his youth that he couldn’t quite recall. Either way, he remembered once hearing about an animal or fictional creature that had the ability to starve itself, to go without water for days, but when its body neared the point of death due to lack of nutrients some kind of inner reflex would kick in violently and force the otherwise passive vermin out into its prey’s habitat for the kill. The thing would bare its fangs, gnash its teeth, and rip anybody that got in its way to shreds to eat the flesh and ensure its survival. He thought about this as he froze in the car on the side of that mountain. The last time he felt his fingertips he still had half of a granola bar and the strength to lick some of the ice off the window to stave off pains a little longer, but now he could only run through the story or the nature special (he swears now, in his deluded state, that it might have been both) and wait for either the end or for something else to snap him out of this. It wouldn’t be his own last second volition, though. He knew that. A park ranger or another lost traveler would be ideal, but it wasn’t looking good. As long as his body would be recovered and his son would remember the way his fingertips felt he could let these thoughts of a rabid, stupid animal pass.
