‘A narcoleptic guy walks into a shopping mall.’ That’s the beginning of a bad joke, he thought to himself as he narrated his journey across town, as he typically did to calm his nerves when he left the house. He woke up on a bench across from the smoothie place and couldn’t tell or remember whether it was light or night outside. He looked down the wide reflective corridor and thought he caught a glimpse of sunshine at the end of it, but as he awakened further and ambled down toward the white brightness he realized it was just the Apple store. “Assholes,” he muttered to himself, thinking of the electricity bill compared to the other businesses. Before he could consider that maybe they just used a different kind of bulb than the soft yellow he had become accustomed to his whole life he bumped into a crowd of teenagers. He heard them talking but didn’t see any of their mouths move. There was a dense pause, he clumsily wandered into the storefront littered with bean bags, fell into a hazy crinkle, and a couple hours later he woke up under the stars.
