“You shine it when I’m alone.”
Wondering momentarily what spooked her enough to start running in the first place, she noticed her gait slowing ever so slightly as her legs pounded the pavement, then the grass, then the train tracks, and then the grass again. The sound of some cars zipping by rejuvenated her, though, and she sped back up to huffing and puffing mode as she hugged the corner of 76th and 2nd. This was the speed she was used to and even though it took more energy to exert, she felt more comfortable. As she reveled in the adrenaline high she went back to the question at hand: why did I start off like this? It was as if she awoke to her own gallop, already midway through town and with lungs working overtime before her brain even became conscious. She looked at her clothes and her hands. On the one hand, her fingernails were dirt-laden and her tattered blue shorts suggested that she was indeed running away from someone or something. On the other, the keys in her pocket and the newly washed t-shirt smell she breathed in along with the rust from the abandoned bicycles and their respective posts and bike racks hinted at some kind of destination. Then she wondered if perhaps it didn’t matter if we was running away or running toward. After all, she did feel the most zen when she was just running, not thinking about the whys or the wheres.
