76. The Drift “Luminous Friend” Blue Hour [Temporary Residence]
Moment @ 3:17
“Don’t do it!” he yelled from the adjacent roof ten feet across the threshold. I couldn’t tell if he thought I was going to commit suicide, which I wasn’t, or if I was trying to jump across to join him on the top of that building, which I was. Either way he seemed like he genuinely cared about how this all turned out, and I appreciated that - not enough to actually listen to him, but I appreciated it nevertheless. I moved backwards like the protagonist does in movies to get a running start, even though I don’t think I needed on, and felt some stray pebbles underneath my sneakers, so I kicked them away. According to his eyes, it looked like he did know that I was trying to leap across to him (there was more fear than concern marked on his brow), and so that gave me more reason to follow through on this before I lost my courage. I felt the wind through my hair before I fully realized that my feet were now alternating in full speed, the entire weight of my being hitting the ground with every stride, and when I involuntarily closed my eyes I noticed there was suddenly only air beneath me. In the back of my head I had hoped that it would feel like flying (if only for a moment), or at the very least an otherworldly kind of floating, but it mostly just felt like falling. I wish I could say it was a graceful landing, but I’m no cat and this roof was no bedroom carpeting. At least at the end I was with my friend.
