One step forward, one step forward, and one step forward. He walked on down the hallway thinking he’d get to the elevator this time. Unfortunately, as soon as he glided onto the ball of his foot to press the button and make it glow, the same thing that had been happening a few times now happened once again. A ding from above his head sounded, he looked up, and then he found himself walking again down by the window, the sunbeam ending as his stride rode through toward the elevator. The next time he counted. Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen steps. Glide into it. Push the button. Ding. Back in the sunbeam, sixteen steps away. He had to get back down to the lobby. Thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen times his loafers hit the outdated carpet. Swing that body up off of it and gently touch the white plastic. He covered his ears, thinking if he didn’t hear the ding he could escape this interminable replay. And again he saw the blue sky out of the corner of his eye, through the dust dancing in the sunlight. This time his feet stopped just as the shadow hit his pant leg. After a split second they continued onward, same as usual, but he savored that extra moment and waited for the next chance to do something similar, something more.
